Intro Woodworking: Build a Toddler's Rocking Chair!

Course Overview In this hands-on woodworking class, students will craft a sturdy toddler-sized rocking chair designed to withstand years of use and playful wear. Guided step-by-step, participants will learn essential woodworking techniques while assembling a functional and timeless piece of furniture.

What You’ll Do

Cut chair components: Shape parts using the bandsaw and router table, with many pieces pre-cut to save time and reduce repetitive cutting.
Drill and fasten: Use the drill, screw gun, and air stapler to securely assemble the chair frame.
Smooth and finish: Refine surfaces with the sander for a professional, child-safe finish.
Final assembly: Put all the pieces together to create a rocking chair that’s both durable and charming.

Skills You’ll Gain

Safe operation of common woodworking tools
Precision cutting and shaping techniques
Assembly methods for strong, lasting furniture
Sanding for smooth, polished results You can paint or apply the finish of your choice at home.

Embark on a hands-on journey to craft your very own edge grain cutting board! This class is perfect for woodwork enthusiasts, whether you're a beginner or have some experience under your tool belt.

What You’ll Learn:

Safety Practices: Learn essential safety tips to keep your woodworking experience enjoyable and accident-free.
Learn to distinguish end grain from edge grain: There’s a difference.
Wood Selection: Discover the best types of wood for cutting boards and why edge grain is a durable choice.
Gluing Techniques: Explore different gluing methods to ensure your board is sturdy and long-lasting.
Smoothing and Sanding: Master the art of planing and sanding wood to achieve smooth, even surfaces.
Edge Finishing: Optionally use the router table to round or chamfer the edges of your creation.
Finishing Touches: Apply food-safe finishes to protect your board and enhance its natural beauty.

What You’ll Make:

By the end of the class, you'll have a stunning, custom edge grain cutting board to take home. Each board is not only a practical kitchen tool but also a unique piece of art you can be proud of.

Note: While not a bladeless class, the strips to make the cutting boards will be precut to various widths in order to maximize design and glue up time.

This is a two session class, please reserve a Part II class to complete your cutting board:

Part I 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Saturday
Part II 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday - the next day (free)

Part II 10:00 AM to 1:00PM the following Saturday (free)

About your Instructor: Phil Kern been an avid woodworker all his life and enjoys solving problems and making everything from garden obelisks to bluebird houses. He worked backstage at many theatre companies in Huntsville building sets and set pieces as well as many home projects. He has 2 daughters who among their many other talents also share his passion for working with wood.

Learn a little, smile a lot. Join the experts for two hours of pen making. You learn the entire process from selecting wood to assembling the pen.

You get hands on tutoring while you make your very own uniquely handcrafted pen.

By the end of the session, you will leave with your own unique handcrafted wooden pen.

What You’ll Do:

Choose your wood
Choose your metal finish
Cut it on the bandsaw
Drill it out on the drill press
Learn lathe safety and operation
Cut, sand and finishing the wood
Assemble the pen

What You'll Need:

Willingness to try something new
No loose clothes or hair
Close toed shoes

** Classes are transferable up to 48 hours before class, but not refundable.

An excellent opportunity to improve upon the skills you learned in the basic Pen Turning Class. This session allows you to make two additional pens and more if time permits. Hone and polish your skill (and pens) in this hands on semi-independent session.

GLASS: "Fall Into Fun" - Beginning Stained Glass Oak Leaf and Acorn Suncatcher

“Fall into Fun” and celebrate autumn color in this beginner‑friendly stained‑glass class. In students make stained‑glass oak leaf and acorn suncatchers while learning the essential skills of glass cutting, grinding, copper foiling, wire work, and soldering.

With just the right amount of challenge for new makers, this class guides students through creating two finished autumn suncatchers ready to hang in a window or give as seasonal gifts.

Note: Please cover up – no shorts, open toed shoes or sandals!

About Your Instructor: Elizabeth Brown's stained-glass work is on display at Harrison Brothers Hardware Art Gallery in Huntsville, AL and Mountain Valley Art Council Art Gallery in Guntersville, AL. She has studied stained glass under master glass artists from around the world, including The Shop's Stained Glass Master, Karen Reed.
