Stained Glass Folk Art Wind Chime

Celebrate the charm of handcrafted folk art with this vibrant stained glass wind chime, centered around a beautiful  bluebird—a timeless symbol of joy, hope, and renewal. Each glass piece is carefully cut, shaped, and soldered using traditional stained‑glass methods, allowing light to shimmer through rich colors that bring the design to life.

Suspended beneath the bluebird, hand‑finished chimes and glass accents create soft, melodic tones with every breeze. The blend of textured glass, rustic metalwork, and gentle movement gives the piece a warm, homespun character that feels both nostalgic and uplifting.

This class is perfect for someone new to stained glass, offering clear guidance through foundational skills such as:

  • Safe and confident glass cutting

  • Foiling and soldering basics

  • Simple assembly and balance techniques

At the same time, it includes clever tricks and thoughtful techniques that intermediate enthusiasts will appreciate—small refinements that elevate craftsmanship, improve precision, and inspire new creative approaches.

By the end, students of all experience levels will walk away with a whimsical, light‑catching wind chime that captures the spirit of handmade folk art and the joy of the bluebird itself.

Note:  Please cover up – no shorts, open toed shoes or sandals!

About your Instructor:  Karen Reed is an accomplished glass artist who’s been working professionally in the medium since 1981.  At her studio, Earthstar Glass, she creates fused glass, painted glass, and stained glass pieces with many of her works combining all three methods (although she’ll tell you there are many more than just three!).  Her creations have been exhibited and offered through galleries across the US.  It’s been requested by the White House and now sits in the archival collection.  Her glass has been accepted at shows curated by past directors of the Smithsonian Institution and Pilchuk Glass.  She’s been featured and published in many books and magazines and her fused glass series “Sunscapes” was shown on CBS TV’s “Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood”.  She has taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont School of the Arts and Crafts, The Appalachian Center for Crafts, Bullseye Glass, Uroboros Glass, Hollander Glass, and Weiser Glass.  She has also taught specialty classes for Art Museums, Botanical Gardens, Clubs, Guilds and Design Centers.  She’s also taught classes at Burritt on the Mountain Folk School and creates custom designs for homes, businesses, and galleries.  We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to tap into her many talents!
