Bladesmithing 102 - Forging an Ulu from Spring Steel
Discover the power of traditional blacksmithing as you transform an ordinary piece of spring steel into a functional, beautifully crafted ulu knife - a tool with deep roots in Inuit and other indigenous Arctic cultures and a distinctive, highly practical curved blade.
In this immersive workshop, students will learn how to heat, shape, and forge spring steel using time‑honored blacksmithing techniques. Starting with a spring steel, you’ll draw out the metal, form the signature sweeping ulu profile, and refine the blade through controlled hammering and shaping. Along the way, you’ll explore the fundamentals of working hot steel, including:
-
Managing forge temperature and heat zones
-
Hammer control and shaping techniques
-
Spreading and flattening steel to create a wide cutting edge
-
Forming curves and transitions
-
Basic grinding and finishing for a clean, functional blade
This class is ideal for beginners who want a guided introduction to blacksmithing, as well as intermediate smiths looking to expand their skills with a project that requires finesse, precision, and creative shaping.
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with:
-
A hand‑forged ulu crafted from a reclaimed leaf spring
-
A deeper understanding of forging fundamentals
-
Practical techniques you can apply to future bladesmithing or blacksmithing projects
Whether you’re drawn to historical tools, metal artistry, or the thrill of shaping steel with fire and hammer, this workshop offers a rewarding, hands‑on experience and a unique finished piece you’ll be proud to use or display.
