Glass: Fused glass flower with Stand

Create a vibrant, kiln‑fired glass flower that blooms forever. In this hands‑on class, students design and construct a fused glass flower mounted on a coordinating stand. Each flower is cut, shaped, and kiln‑fired on top of a piece of clear fusible glass, ensuring strength, clarity, and a polished finish. A border is required in every design, giving your piece structure and a professional look.

All glass used in class is tested compatible, so your project fires safely and beautifully. Students will learn essential glass‑fusing techniques, including cutting, layering, composition, and preparing work for the kiln. Previous glass cutting experience is required, but no fusing experience is needed—just creativity and curiosity.

Your creation will be fired off site and a return visit to the shop will be required to pick up your panel.

What You’ll Learn

  • Designing a fused glass flower with a required border

  • Cutting and fitting glass pieces for layered construction

  • Understanding compatibility and working with COE‑tested materials

  • Preparing your project for kiln firing

  • Finishing and presenting your flower on its stand.  It may be used with a battery powered tea light as a night light.

What You’ll Create

A unique, colorful fused glass flower displayed on a stand—perfect for home décor or gifting.

Note:  Please cover up – no shorts, open toed shoes or sandals!

About your Instructor:  Karen Reed is an accomplished glass artist who’s been working professionally in the medium since 1981.  At her studio, Earthstar Glass, she creates fused glass, painted glass, and stained glass pieces with many of her works combining all three methods (although she’ll tell you there are many more than just three!).  Her creations have been exhibited and offered through galleries across the US.  It’s been requested by the White House and now sits in the archival collection.  Her glass has been accepted at shows curated by past directors of the Smithsonian Institution and Pilchuk Glass.  She’s been featured and published in many books and magazines and her fused glass series “Sunscapes” was shown on CBS TV’s “Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood”.  She has taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont School of the Arts and Crafts, The Appalachian Center for Crafts, Bullseye Glass, Uroboros Glass, Hollander Glass, and Weiser Glass.  She has also taught specialty classes for Art Museums, Botanical Gardens, Clubs, Guilds and Design Centers.  She’s also taught classes at Burritt on the Mountain Folk School and creates custom designs for homes, businesses, and galleries.  We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to tap into her many talents!
