Introduction to Drywall Repair

Drywall repair is one of the most practical skills a homeowner or maker can develop. This class can save students hudreds of dollars on just one repair compared to what a worker might charge you.  You'll go through the complete workflow of diagnosing damage, prearing the repair area, and applying clean, professional‑quality fixes that blend seamlessly into existing walls. Participants will work hands‑on with real materials, completing multiple repair samples they can take home as reference pieces. 

What You’ll Learn

• Damage Assessment — How to identify nail pops, dents, cracks, moisture damage, and cutouts, and determine the correct repair method.

• Surface Preparation — Cutting clean edges, squaring openings, installing backing, and prepping the work area for patching.

• Patching Techniques — Repairing small holes, medium cutouts, corner damage, and larger openings using proper support and fitment.

• Taping & Joint Compound — Applying tape, building layers of compound, feathering edges, and achieving a smooth, invisible finish.

• Sanding & Finishing — Creating a paint‑ready surface, avoiding common sanding mistakes, and preparing the repair for final coating.

• Tool & Material Selection — Understanding knives, sanding blocks, mesh tape, paper tape, patch kits, and compound types.

Please think of examples of repairs you may need at home such as popped nails, picture hanger holes, surface damaged drywall, damage that punches through the drywall, etc. so we can cover them in class.

About Your Instructor:  John Buckman is an accomplished woodworker and builder.  He is the "Shop Foreman" and not only can use each tool in the woodworking area of The Shop but also maintains them.  He's been doing woodworking for over 40 years and will assist members and answer their questions whenever they run into problems with a project.
