Glass: Basic STAINED GLASS box — Tiffany Copper Foil Method (Intermediate Level)

Create a beautifully crafted stained‑glass box using the classic Tiffany copper‑foil method, a technique prized for its clean lines, tight seams, and ability to produce detailed three‑dimensional work. This intermediate‑level class is designed for students who already have experience with accurate glass cutting and are ready to expand their skills into more complex assembly and construction.

Working with pre‑selected patterns and your choice of glass, you’ll cut, foil, and solder each panel before learning how to square, align, and join the pieces into a finished box. Instruction focuses on precision, consistency, and the subtle techniques that make a box sit true, open smoothly, and look professionally made.

Skills Covered

  • Accurate cutting and fitting of box panels

  • Applying copper foil for clean, even seams

  • Soldering techniques for structural strength and crisp edges

  • Building and aligning three‑dimensional forms

  • Adding lids, decorative elements, and finishing touches

By the end of class, you’ll have a fully assembled stained‑glass box and a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship behind Tiffany‑style construction—along with techniques you can apply to future 3D stained‑glass projects.

Note:  Please cover up – no shorts, open toed shoes or sandals!

About your Instructor:  Karen Reed is an accomplished glass artist who’s been working professionally in the medium since 1981.  At her studio, Earthstar Glass, she creates fused glass, painted glass, and stained glass pieces with many of her works combining all three methods (although she’ll tell you there are many more than just three!).  Her creations have been exhibited and offered through galleries across the US.  It’s been requested by the White House and now sits in the archival collection.  Her glass has been accepted at shows curated by past directors of the Smithsonian Institution and Pilchuk Glass.  She’s been featured and published in many books and magazines and her fused glass series “Sunscapes” was shown on CBS TV’s “Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood”.  She has taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont School of the Arts and Crafts, The Appalachian Center for Crafts, Bullseye Glass, Uroboros Glass, Hollander Glass, and Weiser Glass.  She has also taught specialty classes for Art Museums, Botanical Gardens, Clubs, Guilds and Design Centers.  She’s also taught classes at Burritt on the Mountain Folk School and creates custom designs for homes, businesses, and galleries.  We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to tap into her many talents!
